You Have Seven Days Remaining On Your Trial License

7 10 2008

This message is to inform you that you have only seven days remaining on your trial license for Mr Cheese’s Random Ramblings. After this time, your web browser will be blocked from viewing this webpage. To view your details or to purchase a full license, click here.

Just kidding! You can stay as long as you want! I just said that because it’s the topic of today’s post: free trials.

I have downloaded a few free trials for my Mac recently; Notebook, MacJournal and a game called Hordes Of Orcs. In fact, I’m using MacJournal right now to type this!

I found Hordes Of Orcs a little boring. It’s very repetitive and I just got tired of watching the same thing happening on every level.

I’m still trying Notebook, but from what I’ve seen of it, it’s really good! I don’t think I’ll be paying the $50 (£28.66) to purchase the full version. At least, not until I have a real need for it other than playing.

Finally, MacJournal. This is the first time I have used it, typing this post, so I have no idea whether it’s a good-un or not. I’ll have to wait and use my seven days to find out.

I’ll post back later with the test results!

More iTunes Ranting

11 09 2008

Well, after waiting for three hours for the music to download onto the memory stick (including having to start again because I accidentally press Undo), I plugged it into Harry’s computer, opened it and got the message “The file could not be opened. It may be damaged or corrupted.” Hah! Three hours! For nothing! So I got down to business and transferred the songs over the internet connection straight into his Shared Documents, which I didn’t want to do because I knew it would be slower. After waiting for that, I showed him how to use iTunes 8 and now he’s in bed listening to Smoke On The Water by Deep Purple.

“Boom!” – Steve Jobs, “Let’s Rock” Event

10 09 2008

Well, it may be “Boom!” and everything’s done for good old Steve Jobs (who’s apparently dead), but it’s certainly not for me. Having downloaded iTunes 8 and it working perfectly on my Mac, getting it to work on Harry’s PC was a rather big hassle. First, it wouldn’t install properly. Then, once it did install, everything was pixelated and pink. Finally, having sorted that out, it won’t find my shared library, which is why I’m now downloading my 257 songs onto a memory stick to transfer them over. You see, he used to just use the shared library to listen to my music, but now it won’t work. That’s Windows for you.

I also had a mini Microsoft Office-related trauma involving the mens’ public toilets, a rather large wooden bat and a bar of lead… No, I’m joking. It was actually a lot less exciting than that. My school have just upgraded to Office 2007, and I had to continue a PowerPoint presentation for homework. However, I saved it onto my memory stick, brought it home and… Uh oh. It’s a .pptx file, and I have Office 2004. Whoops! So I hastily downloaded the 2007 to 2004 file converter from Microsoft, and then got on with choosing my Corporate Identity for my ICT course.

Yippee For Apple!

9 09 2008

I’m very happy today, because Apple held their “Let’s Rock” event today. Amongst iTunes 8, which now features HD TV shows, the new iPod Nano, which comes in:

  • Silver
  • Black
  • Purple
  • Blue
  • Green
  • Yellow
  • Orange
  • Red and
  • Oink (otherwise known as Pink)

and also features an iPhone-esque accelerometer which enables Cover Flow and Shake-to-Shuffle. But my favourite part? The new, thinner, better, iPod Touch! Seeing as I want one of my October birthday, this is a good time to release a new one. It includes a built-in speaker, a better UI (User Interface) and they’ve redesigned it to look like an iPhone. Yay! Although I haven’t read the price section yet…

Staying Creative

6 09 2008

I carried on the Photoshop antics today as well, creating a cucumber with legs running across a road – not very realistic, I know, but fun to make! I’ll post it up on Flickr later (see previous post for link). In fact, I’ll post it here as well. I also have more tutorial-like videos like Bert Monroy for you: Photoshop User TV, The Russell Brown Show and Photoshop Killer Tips [iTunes Links].

I had a bit of a break today, though. We went to the Lewes Horticultural Show (or something to that effect) to take some photos for the newsletter or magazine that they want to produce with them. I would post some of them, but I don’t have my camera cable with me. You can see them another day.

Getting Creative

5 09 2008

Today, I got started using Photoshop CS and Illustrator CS, both by Adobe. Using “real” Photoshop was easier than for some as I have had a bit of experience with Elements. However, I did not know how to use the pen tool because it isn’t included in Elements! I also have no idea what I’m doing in Illustrator. I’ve played around a bit with it, but I still don’t have a clue about any of it. I’m going to look for some tutorials to start getting used to the basics. If you want to learn some Photoshop stuff, check out Bert Monroy’s weekly video – some of the pictures in my Flickr photostream were made using his techniques, but most of them came from How To Cheat In Photoshop Elements (which is actually co-written by my Chromatically Challenged Father).

Postless…

28 08 2008

Due to unforeseen circumstances, I have had no access to Mr Cheese’s Random Ramblings – sorry! I could have posted from my PSP, but I used a strong password generator to create my WordPress password so I couldn’t remember it to log in. In case you were wondering, I use 1Password to log in to websites where I have this situation.

Anyway, this week, several events have happened:

  • Tuesday, we went on a bike ride down the Cuckoo Trail from Polegate to Hailsham, stopping at the Common Pond in Hailsham for lunch.
  • Yesterday, we went bowling, and I lost one of the games to my seven-year-old brother, but beat him in the second game.
  • Today, we went to Pizza Hut for lunch, where we had an all-you-can-eat buffet, followed by banoffee pie for pudding – yum!
So it has been a fairly fun week, but unfortunately only a week today until school starts again… 😦
